More than 1,000 people flock to see Mammoth Tusk after epic discovery

MORE than 1,000 people have flocked to see a prehistoric tusk which was discovered in a quarry near Malvern, writes Aaron Wise.

The rare tusk, identified as the remains of a Woolly Mammoth, has drew in the crowds since going on display at Worcester City Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday, August 20.

Believed to have roamed around the Worcestershire countryside around 50,000 years ago, the giant mammal, which was revealed to be a young male, could have been 11ft tall at the shoulder and may have weighed up to six tonnes.

The stunning discovery, reported on last week’s Malvern Observer front page, was made earlier this year at Tarmac’s Clifton Quarry, close to the village of Severn Stoke, by a plant driver who reported it to field supervisor, Graham Arnold and animal bone specialist, James Spry of Worcestershire County Council’s archive and archaeology service.

Helen Large, marketing and events manager at Worcester City Museum and Art Gallery, said: “There has been a brilliant response to the mammoth tusk, with more than a thousand visitors coming in to see it since it went on display.

“Visitors have been amazed at how old it is and how large it is. It’s wonderful to see in the flesh something that most of us have only seen on TV or in films. It’s amazing to think this mammoth was roaming Worcestershire 50,000 years ago.”

The tusk is available to view from 10.30am to 4.30pm between Mondays and Saturdays at the museum, for a limited time only.
