A shining example of solar energy

THE EFFORTS of a company based near Upton on Severn were showcased as part of an event to celebrate solar energy in the UK.

County home-owner Stephen Bell welcomed Vince Smith, the managing director of 2020SolarPV based in Earls Croome back into his ‘solar house’ as part of Solar Independence Day.

Worcester’s MP Robin Walker was also invited to view the property in the St Peter’s area of the city, by the Solar Trade Association to celebrate the day which was held earlier this month.

As well as explaining the ecological benefits of generating energy through sunlight, Mr Bell also explained how their energy bills had fallen dramatically as a result of their work.

Mr Bell and partner Sheila Joynes, asked the company to install 16 solar panels on the roof to generate and provide their own energy.

The work was carried out by 2020SolarPV, which specialise in renewable energy solutions.

During the visit, the proud home-owners also showcased their triple glazed windows and electric car, which helps to ease pressure on the national grid along with the solar panels.

The house can generate electricity to charge the car, and the vehicle can then put that power back into the house during a blackout, which according to the couple amounts to the cost effective benefits of going solar.

Mr Bell told the Observer: “I think it’s nice Robin Walker trusts his constituents opinions and actually looked to us for information to build his own opinions, and I think that’s a good way of taking local people’s knowledge and using it.

“The benefits of having a solar home will hopefully go on for 20 years or longer.

“We may seem unusual in that we haven’t done this for eco-friendly green reasons but because there are such good financial benefits to be had.

When asked why other city residents should consider ‘going solar’, Mr Bell said: “Do the sums and work it out for yourself and if you can make the investment then do it.

“There’s so much information around and really is worth it,” he added.

Mr Smith was on hand to speak to Mr Walker about his company’s work and told the Observer he was thrilled to be able to return to the property.

“It’s really excellent to come back and see this home,” he said.

“We don’t often come back to our customers so soon after installing so it’s great to catch up with Stephen and Sheila who are so positive and enthusiastic about solar power.”

Speaking after the tour, which also included a trip out in the couple’s electric car, Mr Walker told the Observer he was excited about the fast growing industry.

“I think this solar house is very impressive and something that demonstrates clearly the way in which people can save money as it can represent a really good investment,” he said.

“It can be a very cost effective way of managing your energy and of course making a contribution to fighting climate change and improving the environment.

“What’s so exciting about the way technology is developing in this sector, is it’s crossing that Rubicon where this becomes something that just makes sense for people financially as individuals rather than something Government has to be pushing,” he added.
