Cable car bid sparks fighting for hills group

A GROUP aimed at stopping the development of a cable car on the Malvern Hills looks set to be created by a determined town resident.

Richard Edwards, of Moorlands Road, is hoping to set up the Voice of Malvern Hills on the back of Malvern for All stating their intention to get expert advice on the legal acts protecting the famous landmark.

The 74-year-old dreamt up the idea about ten days ago and spoke to residents in the town before arranging the launch of the group at a public meeting next Saturday (March 28) at Malvern Cube on Albert North Road at 4.30pm.

“My feeling was the Conservators would turn proposals down and it would all fizzle out,” he said.

“But when I learned Malvern for All were going to seek advice on the acts I decided to come out of my trench and start fighting.

“There are a whole range of people against it but they are all isolated at the moment and that is why I am hoping to bring this together.”

The group’s objectives include campaigning against the commercial exploitation of the Malvern Hills, encourage an understanding of the landscape, flaura and fauna of the hills, to encourage disabled people to use the hills and to work alongside further organisations with the same values.

“What worries me is this proposal is to try and alter the law,” Mr Edwards added.

“Somebody said to me they have talked to local councillors who have said the cable car was dead in the water but my response was I will keep campaigning until I see it floating and pass down the river.

“I am a little worried these acts could get changed and that is why I am doing what I am doing.”
