Campaign launched for Elgar's 'Land of Hope and Glory' to be new county anthem

A CAMPAIGN is underway for one of the finest works created by Malvern’s famous son Sir Edward Elgar to become a new anthem for Worcestershire.

‘Land of Hope and Glory’ has become one of the country’s best known songs and it recently came out on top in a poll for what should be England’s own national anthem.

The campaign, launched as part of World Class Worcestershire – a drive to raise the profile of Worcestershire – is encouraging as many residents as possible to stretch their vocal cords and to film themselves singing Land of Hope of Glory.

Local festival goers, residents, Morris Dancers and choirs have been singing loud and proud to show their support of the county song – with their videos being showcased on the World Class Worcestershire website, www.worldclassworcestershire.co.uk.

Stephen Shellard, Musical Director of Worcester Cathedral Chamber Choir, said: “The importance of Sir Edward Elgar’s music is not only felt worldwide but also amongst the people of his home county of Worcestershire.

“Music is one of the few things that can truly unite people and his music has found its way into the hearts and minds of millions, not least through his best known tune ‘Land of Hope and Glory’. Great music always stands the test of time and I would urge as many people to record their version of this moving and iconic melody to make it their own, bringing it into the 21st century.”

Coun Ken Pollock, responsible for Economy, Skills and Infrastructure at Worcestershire County Council, added: “Worcestershire is a county that has so much to offer, it deserves to have its own anthem. Land of Hope & Glory is one of the most famous songs around and I am proud of its links to this county.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to get behind the campaign and to share their pride in Worcestershire by singing the song.”

‘Land of Hope and Glory’ will take centre stage at this year’s Last Night of the Proms on Saturday, September 10.
