Can you help get Shar-Pei 'Elmo' back to full health?

TWO DEDICATED volunteers from Malvern have made a public appeal to raise funds so a rare-breed dog they rescued can be given vital treatment.

The launch of the appeal comes after Emma Steel and Lynne Parish rescued the six-month Shar-Pei named Elmo from his owner who could no longer care for him.

Both Emma and Lynne, who volunteer for Shar-Pei Rescue of Great Britain, took the pup from its owner in Hull to Malvern where it is has received initial treatment at the Best Friends Veterinary Surgery on Worcester Road.

And the pair feared Elmo would die on the five-hour trip back to Malvern as he was in such poor condition. They had to make regular stops to give him water because he was so dehydrated and his skin was in terrible condition.

When they collected him he weighed just eight-and-a-half kilos but has already put on significant weight since being in the volunteers’ care. But his poor eyesight remains their main concern as there is a possibility he could become blind if he does not have the eye operation.

The pair want to raise funds to help pay for expensive treatment to give him the life he deserves.

Emma said she felt Elmo had been given the wrong medication which led to his poor condition.

“He was flat out like a pancake, boiling hot and had two coats on because the owner thought because he would be cold with his limited fur,” she said.

“His eyes were completely closed when we collected him and they have had to be forced open.

“He is going to need several operations with the most expensive being an eye operation which will cost around £2,000. I think the vets bill so far is around £600 because he has needed special medication and we are trying to raise funds as well as the awareness of the breed.

“It would be great if we can save his eyes.”

People can make a donation by popping into the Best Friends Veterinary Surgery or online by visiting sharpeirescue.me.uk/help us.htm.
