COMPETITION FEATURE - 'Proud' record breaker Peter Shilton can't wait for Malvern visit

Malvern Editorial 19th Aug, 2016 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016   0

ENGLAND’s most capped footballer of all time Peter Shilton has spoken of his excitement at coming to Malvern to tell audiences the good, the bad and the ugly about his eventful career in the beautiful game.

Goalkeeper Shilton, who played for numerous clubs including Nottingham Forest. Derby County, Leicester, Stoke and Southampton, will join legendary football commentator John Motson, comedian Kevin Connolly and Sky Sports presenter Gary Newbon for the Sporting Legends show at Malvern Theatres on Thursday, September 8.

The night will give hundreds of people the chance to share conversations with the three sporting legends during an evening of hilarious anecdotes and memoirs.

Audiences wanting to know football will certainly be able to get the full lowdown from Shilton who played an extraordinary 1,300 competitive matches.

He played in three World Cups for his country and was capped a record 125 times.

He also helped Nottingham Forest to European Cup triumphs under the leadership of Brian Clough.

Speaking exclusively to the Observer, Shilton said the night promises to be a great one for sport lovers.

“It’s going to be a great night and I can’t wait for it to start,” he said.

“It’s a great chance for me to take to the stage and talk about my career. I’ve played so many games for different clubs so I have plenty of stories to tell. One includes when I scored a goal for Leicester City.

“I think me and John Motson gel well together and it is always very entertaining to watch. There’s also a serious side to it so it creates a nice balance to the show,

“There’s such a good mix of characters taking to the stage so I’m hoping the audience will really take to it.”

Shilton said it was honour to be capped by his country 125 times and said time will tell on how long he will have the record for.

He added: “Being capped the most times and holding the record is something I’m obviously very proud of.

“Many people come up to me saying I could have had even more caps if Don Revie hadn’t preferred Ray Clemence during his time as England manager.

“David Beckham got close and now Wayne Rooney is close so it’s a matter of time of seeing how things go with Wayne in the next year or two.”

Following a disappointing summer for English football which saw England crash out of Euro 2016 to international minnows Iceland, Shilton believes they now have the right man in Sam Allardyce to take them forward after he was installed as Roy Hodgson’s replacement as manager of the national team.

“When you look at the fact we wanted an English manager at the helm, I think Sam was the logical choice,” he added.

“In my mind there are fors and against but I wish him all the best and let’s hope he can get more out of the players when it comes to the crunch than Roy Hodgson did.”

Tickets for the show, which starts at 7.45pm, cost from £21.84 and are available by calling the Box Office on 01684 892277 or visiting www.malvern-theatres.co.uk.
