Delight expressed after Elmslie House wins Malvern Civic Award

A VICTORIAN house in Malvern has been crowned the winner of a prestigious award after its dedicated owners carried out extensive renovation works to maintain its splendour.

The 154-year-old Elmslie House on Avenue Road came out on top against five other nominations to win this year’s annual Malvern Civic Award.

For more than 20 years the Malvern Civic Society has handed out the award which goes to new or renovated buildings which add something special to the built environment of the area.

Built in 1862 by Malvern architect Edmund Wallace Elmslie, the historic house went through several changes of ownership before Anna Taylor and her husband and Bernard bought it in 2013.

To maintain its unique Victorian style, the pair carried out a thorough and careful renovation of the house and garden using architect Steve Davies and a team of local craftsmen.

Mrs Taylor said: “We are really chuffed to picked up the award as we have come up against some really notable improvements from other buildings.

“All the hard work has paid off and we have had a lot of appreciative comments from the residents of Malvern.”

John Dixon, chair of the Civic Award sub-committee, added: “This iconic Victorian mansion has been saved for posterity; the craftsmanship and attention to detail have been superb and, as the owners are keen to arrange a series of public events in the house, the whole community can enjoy what has been achieved.”

The other nominations for this year’s award were Nightingale Court, No 8 The Lees off Thirlstane Road, No 17 Imperial Road, the Razak Science Centre at Malvern College and apartment complex The Corner.
