Former Malvern College student Mark Pougatch bags top ITV Sport position

FORMER Malvern College pupil Mark Pougatch has been appointed as ITV Sport’s lead presenter and could soon become the national face of football on British television.

He has replaced Adrian Chiles, who was axed earlier this month, and will make his debut on Tuesday, February 17, when Chelsea take on Paris St Germain in the UEFA Champions League.

Pougatch will continue to lead ITV’s coverage of the competition as it reaches its climax this season, as well as the Europa League and England internationals.

But the broadcaster is currently embroiled in a multi-million pound bidding war with the BBC for the rights to show next season’s Premier League highlights, with some experts expecting ITV to take the lucrative contract.

Following the appointment Mark said: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining ITV and to be given this great opportunity.

“I’m looking forward to be working with ITV’s talented pool of commentators and pundits on some of the very best football there is.”

Niall Sloane, director of ITV Sport, added: “Mark is a highly-respected sports journalist and an outstanding broadcaster.

“We’re delighted to welcome Mark to the ITV Sport team.”

Mark attended Malvern College between 1981 and 1986 as a teenager.

He captained the cricket team and was a ‘prolific’ striker for the football team according to a college spokeswoman, scoring a hat-trick in a 6-2 away win against Eton and grabbing one of two goals in a 2-1 win against Manchester Grammar School.

He currently presents sport programmes for BBC Radio 5 Live which he will continue alongside his work for ITV.
