A PROMISING golfer was among the high flyers in Malvern as hundreds of teenagers collected their GCSE results today (Thursday).

Lucy Walton was still celebrating her triumph in yesterday’s U18 Hereford and Worcester Junior Golf Championships when she made her way to Malvern St James.

And it appears the Hanley Swan residents drive off the course to study hard has also paid off as she recorded four A* and five As.

“I’m shocked and thrilled,” Lucy said. “It just shows how the hard work has paid off. I’m very excited to be going into the Sixth Form at MSJ.”

Her mother, Di Walton, added: “Everyone always assumes it’s all about the sport with Lucy, but MSJ has always without question provided so much academic support alongside, giving her the flexibility to pursue her sporting career.

“Yesterday she retained the championship and today a set of results like this.”

There was many other success stories at the girls’ school as the number of students achieving five or more A*-C grades rose to 99 per cent.

It also saw a record 35 per cent of top grades being awarded, with the amount of girls picking up at least one A* to A increasing to 60 per cent.

Perfect scores seemed to be the order of the day at Malvern College, with 20 of its pupils notching up eight A’s or more.

Alexander Tocher was the biggest recipient as he racked up an astonishing 14 A*s. This was two more than Carla Walla, while Oscar Holroyd, Freya Westwood and Aiden Baird all claimed 11.

Headmaster Antony Clark said: “I am thrilled for the Malvern College pupils who received their GCSE results. They can be very proud of their outstanding achievements.”

Stuart Weston, headteacher at Dyson Perrins C of E Academy, was also beaming from ear to ear after his school secured its best ever GCSE results.

A total of 64 per cent of students gained five A* to C grades including English and maths, which Mr Weston said built on a successful Ofsted inspection where the school was graded as ‘Good’.

“It has been a fantastic year for Dyson Perrins and everyone associated with the school,” he said.

“I am incredibly proud of our students who worked so hard and fully deserve these excellent results. The immense efforts of the staff and the support they offer our students has paid off and been rewarded with our best results ever.”

Girls did better than boys at The Chase, with more than 77 per cent of female students getting five A* to C, including English and maths.

And headteacher Paul Jacob said he was very proud of the results as 71 per cent of his pupils achieved gold standard.

“We are ecstatic that the hard work of so many of our stands has been rewarded by these fantastic results,” he added.

Meanwhile, staff at Hanley Castle High School were celebrating their best ever results as 73 per cent of students securing five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C.

Students also topped last year’s performance in the English Baccalaureate measure with 47 per cent securing A* to C passes in English, maths, the sciences, a humanities subject and a modern foreign language.

Rosie Arnold achieved the best marks as picked up nine A*s and one A.  Hot on her heels were Poppy Burgess and Emily Dodd with seven A*s and three As, Ollie Badger, Emma Harbour and Alex Jeynes with seven A*s and two A grades and Hazel Davies, Nancy Lennard and Oriella Marucci with six A*s and four As.
