Great Malvern pulls into top ten

GREAT Malvern Station has been declared as one of the most iconic stations in the country.

English Heritage ranked it as ninth in its list of Great English Railway stations.

A description on the organisation’s blog page English Calling said the Avenue Road venue was one of the most ‘characterful’ of the 1860s when it was designed in Gothic inspired style by E W Elmslie.

The list highlights the deep platform awnings, brackets with ornamental spandrels and iron columns as some of its most iconic features.

A spokesman from London Midland which runs the station, said: “We have invested a lot in in Great Malvern Station but any improvements have always been sensitive to its history and heritage.

“It is a great little station and one of the best preserved on the line, especially when you look what Malvern Link was like at one stage until it was refurbished recently.

“There has been a lot of partnership work gone in to Great Malvern and it is a great achievement and we are very pleased to be associated with it.”

He added: “It is very much a working station not a museum.

“Everything which has been done is to keep it working whilst being sensitive to its design.”

London Paddington Station was named as number one in the list.
