A TEAM from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) will represent in the UK at the World Extrication Championships in Brazil next year after finishing second in a nationwide contest.

Two HWFRS teams took part in the UKRO National Challenge in Gloucestershire after shining in the regional event.

The successful team of Adrian Phillips, Shaun Moser, Pat Murphy, Simon Griffiths, Dan Gray and Matthew Richardson had to take part in a series of challenges that included freeing casualties from road traffic collisions, trauma situations, urban search and rescue, plus rope rescue.

There was also further success for Simon Griffiths who joined forces with Jayne Collins to compete in the trauma challenge.

The pair finished fifth and will now go onto represent the UK at the World Trauma Championships in Portugal later this year.

Competition took place over two days with 44 teams taking part,  all of them having to contend with some challenging scenarios which put their skills to the test.

The HWFRS teams took part in extensive training prior to the event, much of which involved ultra heavy vehicle rescue practice at Droitwich Spa Fire Station.

They also competed in regional competitions in addition to representing the UK at Intershulz, an intenrational competition which took place at Hanover in Germany.

The competition is designed to develop skills and help educate firefighters, enabling them to respoind to incidents in the best possible way.
