HISTORICAL documents have been discovered which have revealed a Welland pub maybe more than 200 years old.
About 20 pages worth of information concerning The Pheasant Inn were passed to Welland and Little Malvern Parish Council after they were found among the possessions of a former landlord who passed away recently.
The documents which include indentures, mortgage agreements, last wills and testimonies as well as other legal paperwork are now being catalogued by Viv Nelson, who lives at Pheasant Cottages which was once owned by a former Pheasant Inn landlord.
The pub, which closed in 2010, was thought to have been there since 1865 but the latest batch of paperwork has revealed an inn has been on the site since 1788. Viv has now launched an appeal for a local historian to come forward to help determine the Pheasant’s true origins.
She said: “We need help from a keen local historian here who can help us analyse the documents that give an insight into its fascinating past.
“The Pheasant is obviously of greater historic value than was previously thought and great care needs to be taken before any parts of this historic building are altered as is currently envisaged by developers.”
The fate of the former pub is currently a controversial topic in Welland as the site has been targeted for housing development.
