Popular community-funding 'Soup' project to be launched in Malvern

A COMMUNITY funding scheme which has swept the globe is coming to Malvern and ideas to boost the town are wanted.

Project proposals are now being sought for the first Malvern Soup event, which is being held on Sunday, September 25 at 3pm at Malvern Cube in Albert Road North.

Soup is a micro-funding movement which started in Detroit and now operates in 40 locations across the UK.

The idea behind the Soup project is that people pay a set amount at the door, usually £4, and are given a bowl of soup, and can bring other food with them to share, if they choose to do so.

Four local projects, not necessarily charities, then have four minutes to pitch to the audience and take questions. There is then a secret vote and the winner is given the money from the meeting to go towards their project.

There is also the opportunity to showcase the talents of local artists while the votes are being counted.

Chris Reed, founder of Malvern Soup, said: “The real benefit is getting people together to look at new plans and projects for the community. Even if a project doesn’t win, it gets the benefit of a lot of publicity, discussion and interest in the idea, and each entrant is welcome to pitch again at later Soups.

“It’s about creating a safe space for diverse groups to come together and support each other for the benefit of the community. It all benefits Malvern.”

Residents and community groups can now put forward proposals to be considered by visiting www.malvernsoup.co.uk. The deadline for entries is Friday, August 26.
