Protests outside Malvern Iceland after kangaroo concerns

Malvern Editorial 19th Mar, 2015 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016   0

SUPERMARKET shoppers were urged to boycott a Great Malvern store during a protest aimed at highlighting the slaughtering of kangaroos in Australia.

Members of Worcestershire Vegans and Veggies held banners and placards and distributed leaflets to shoppers outside Iceland on Saturday (March 14) to highlight their opposition to the Church Street store selling the meat.

The protest was part of a national day of action against the annual slaughter of millions of kangaroos.

Ronald Lee, Worcestershire Vegans and Veggies communications officer, said:

“There is no scientific justification for the killing, which is done so money can be made from selling kangaroo meat.

“In an attempt to boost falling sales, Iceland has started selling kangaroo and other so-called ‘exotic’ meats and our members were urging shoppers to boycott the store until they ceased doing so.

“They were also asking members of the public to consider ending or at least reducing their consumption of any type of meat and other animal products, because all of these involve slaughter and suffering.

“Thankfully more and more people are becoming vegan or vegetarian every year and many others are reducing their consumption of meat, fish, eggs and dairy out of concern for animals, the environment or their own health.

“Worcestershire Vegans and Veggies exists to help people switch to a more humane diet and lifestyle.”

Nick Canning, joint managing director at Iceland, said: “Iceland stocks products in response to our customer demand and we intend to continue selling this delicious lean meat, which our customers can buy with total confidence that it has been sourced sustainably, responsibly, ethically and humanely.”
