Time running out to vote for Malvern's sporting stars

TIME is running out to vote for Malvern’s sporting stars at this year’s Malvern Hills District Community Sports Awards.

Nominations close next Friday (May 27) with 13 accolades up for grabs including Volunteer of the Year and Inclusive Project of the Year with the winners announced on July 14 at Malvern College in front of more than 200 guests and dignitaries.

Several business in the area have pledged heir backing of the awards including the Morgan Motor Company who has sponsored Young Volunteer of the Year and Fortis Living who is sponsoring the Team of the Year award.

Now in its sixth year, the awards recognise coaches, clubs, volunteers and those who play sport and will be hosted by BBC Hereford and Worcester presenter Andrew Easton.

Winners on the night will be automatically shortlisted for the County Sports Awards which take place in November.

Coun David Watkins, portfolio holder for healthier communities for Malvern Hills District Council, said: “What makes the awards special is they not only recognise the success of those who play sport, but the behind the scenes volunteers as well who put in hours of their time for nothing to make that possible.

“By shining a light on them I hope it will inspire others to get active. I would urge everyone to nominate a club, team or individual who you think deserves to be celebrated at this prestigious event.”

Last year’s awards attracted a record number of nominations and it is hoped this success can be repeated once again this year.

Winners from the 2015 awards included Dyson Perrins Year 11 Rugby Team (Team of the Year), Ryan Atkins (Male Sports Personality), Barbara Gibson (Female Sports Personality) and Jane Poynder (Unsung Hero), Steve Briggs (Volunteer of the Year) and Malvern Cycle Sport (Club of the Year).

All applicants for the awards must either live, attend a school or participate at a club within the Malvern Hills district.

Application forms can be requested from Jordan Cotton by emailing [email protected] or calling 01684 862372.

Online nominations can be made by visiting www.malvernhills.gov.uk/sports-awards.
