Tyler, six, sets sights on piano with business launch

A DETERMINED six-year-old girl has launched her own business to save money to buy a piano.

Tyler Willis, from Malvern Link, has been playing the keyboard for about five months and is enjoying it so much that she would ideally like a Steinway and Sons grand piano, worth tens of thousands of pounds.

But her parents have managed to scale down her expectations and now the Somers Park Primary School pupil is hoping to raise about £500 to buy a digital piano.

In October the youngster started up Tyler’s Treats selling ‘candy filled cones’ and ‘chocolate coated marshmallows’ which she makes herself.

Later that month she became the youngest ever stall holder at The Fold’s farmers market in Bransford and returned again on Sunday (November 23) for the venue’s Christmas Fair.

So far Tyler has raised about £100 although she keeps spending the money to reinvest in stock with waiting orders for more than 60 items.

Her mother Gené Willis told the Observer: “My husband plays the bass so I think Tyler has got the music bug. She has been playing the keyboard and is really enjoying it but a piano is not just something you can go out and buy, so we said ‘if you want one you’ll have to do something to earn it’.

“She is absolutely loving what she is doing now with the business and the piano has almost become secondary.”

Other local businesses have helped the young entrepreneur get the business off the ground. Gené said Tyler had been inspired to turn her idea into a reality after speaking to Ruby Williams of Ruby’s Kitchen in Worcester, while Carl Murphy from PVC Printed Banners and Signs in Malvern has provided the banner which was on display on Sunday.

But the six-year-old does most of the work herself including keeping her own ledger, although her parents help monitor emails and the business’s own Facebook page.

Gené added: “She is learning so many different things through doing this, like maths through keeping track of the sales as well as the value of money.

“Now when she goes to a shop it’s not about what she wants, but it’s about how the business works.

“This is not something we are making her do, she is really enjoying it. A customer said at the fair ‘are you helping mummy?’ and she replied by saying ‘no, mummy is helping me’.”
