Adventure awaits in the brigades

Malvern Editorial 10th Oct, 2015 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016   0

ASPIRING adventurous are being given the chance to put their enthusiasm for the outdoors into action by joining the Malvern Brigades.

The Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades, sponsored by Malvern Baptist Church, provide a ‘structured management system’ which young people can join from aged five to 19 years old.

Both groups hold annual summer camps as well as expedition camping with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme (DofE) which includes canoeing, cycling and back packing.

As a result of starting the DofE programme, a Boys Drum and Bugle Band was formed in 1991 and still operates now – having won the National Class championships in 2008 and 2011.

Band members have also played in the Lord Mayors Show and the annual Remembrance Festival in the town.

Paul Hern, group secretary, said: “Because these are uniformed organisations they have always been classed as ‘militaristic’ but this is far from the truth.

“The young people are empowered by being involved in the week-to-week running of the company parade nights. The uniform also provides a levelling influence which prevents any divisiveness.

“Following the recent debate about ‘things to do in the town’ here is an excellent opportunity for young people to become involved in a practical and demanding environment which will provide them with improved life skills.”

Paul added the brigade’s are interested in recruiting those from five to seven years old and ten to 13 years old.
