In-form Town keeping feet on the ground

MALVERN Town boss Les Jones has urged his players not to get too carried away despite making a perfect start to their West Midlands Regional League campaign.

Town’s 3-2 victory over Wellington Amateurs on Saturday was their third win on the bounce as they moved up to second in the league – level on points with early leaders AFC Bridgnorth.

Jones said he was delighted by his side’s start to the season, which has also included impressive away wins over Cradley Town and Bewdley Town.

However, he said he was making sure his players’ feet remained on the ground as he looks ahead to clashes against fellow unbeaten sides Smethwick Rangers and Wellington in the coming days.

“We could not have got off to a better start to the season, but we won’t know what the pecking order is in the league until six or seven games have gone,” he said.

“We could have played the three worst teams in the league or the best three – we don’t know yet.

“We have got two tough games coming up. On Saturday, we are away to Smethwick who we lost to last year, and then we are at home to Wellington on Tuesday who are also doing well.

“I am absolutely delighted by the way we are playing, but I just don’t want us to

get too carried away with it.

“The most pleasing factor for me so far has been the fact we are scoring goals and we are creating opportunities. I have also been pleased with the attitude of the lads. On Saturday we were 2-0 up and they brought it back to 2-2, but we showed real character to go on to win the game and win it quite handsomely.”

Jones said he has also been pleased by how well his new signings have settled into his side, with Bryan Craven notably netting six goals in his first three games.

“Three out of the four players we signed in attack have scored, which is encouraging,” he said. “Bryan, especially, has made a big difference. He has played at a good level over the past ten years, so he has got the experience and holds the ball up well, which give us an extra dimension in attack.

“He’s friends with all the lads and has slotted in really well along with Jake (Hollylee), Kirk (Layton) and Sam Rathbone so I am delighted with that.”
