Jones: Malvern's performances "up with the best" since I joined

LES JONES has hailed Malvern Town’s recent performances as ‘up there with the best’ since he’s been with the club following the Hillsiders’ seventh straight league win at the weekend.

Malvern eased to a comprehensive 5-0 victory over lowly Gornal Athletic on Saturday to maintain their fourth place spot in the West Midlands (Regional) League table with three games remaining.

Two goals from Ben Hayes and one each from Luke Corbett, Dave Reynolds and Matthew Turner secured the win for Jones’ side.

Jones has been Malvern Town’s manager for almost five years and said their current displays are the best he’s seen under his reign.

“I was really delighted with the performance on a difficult pitch,” Jones said.

“Despite only being 1-0 up at half time, we came good and run out comfortable winners.

“In the time I have been here, the performances are getting better and I think they’re up their with the best I have seen.”

Malvern took the lead in the 24th minute when Hayes slotted home after wrong-footing Gornal keeper Ryan Sommers.

They then doubled the lead in the 57th minute through Hayes before Reynolds added the third on the hour mark.

Four minutes later it was 4-0 to Malvern when Corbett netted his 17th goal in 16 appearances before Turner rounded off the scoring in the 72nd minute.

Malvern’s next game sees them make the trip to Ellesmere Rangers on Saturday and Jones told the Observer it is a must win game if his side have any hopes of achieving a top five finish.

“We beat them 3-0 last time but as we are away from home it will be a really tough game as Ellesmere have similar aspirations to us.

“It’s a must win game if we want to maintain our good run and secure a top five spot.”
