Malvern climb to fourth after big win

MALVERN Town moved up to fourth in the West Midlands Regional League Premier Division after hammering Haughmond 4-1 at the HDanywhere Community Stadium.

It did not look like it was going to be Town’s day as they missed a host of chances in the first half before the visitors took the lead in the 52nd minute.

But Malvern’s persistence paid off as Dave Reynolds scored the equaliser before they ran out convincing winners.

Town’s cause was boosted when Ed Ashlin saw red before goals from Reece King, Matt Turner and Sam Rathbone followed.

Having drawn three of their last four league games, manager Les Jones urged his side to go all out for three points and they got off to a bright start.

Joe Endacott volleyed the ball just over the bar before a loose clearance from Haughmond keeper Sam Jones almost led to a goal.

But he managed to stop Town from scoring in the first half as Kirk Layton and Lee Hooper both had their efforts saved by the keeper.

Malvern then suffered a big setback seven minutes after the interval when Chas Weaver could only parry Louie Irvine’s shot into the path of Carl Rogers who hit the back of the net.

This triggered a response from Malvern who levelled the score in the 67th minute. Ben Hayes ran to the byline before pulling the ball back to Reynolds to fire home.

Haughmond’s hopes of hanging on for a draw were then dealt a double blow when Ed Ashlin received his second yellow card before King struck to make it 2-1.

Malvern were also reduced to ten men as Aaron Richards saw red, but this failed to derail them as they added two further goals to wrap up a comfortable win.

Turner scored his side’s third in the 89th minute before Rathbone side-stepped Jones and slotted the ball into the empty net to complete the scoring.
