MALVERN rider Liam Killeen was crowned National Mountain Bike Cross Country Series for the first time at the fourth round of the event in Builth Wells.

With four of the best five rounds counting towards the overall points total, Killeen’s victory in the Elite category at Fforest Fields ensured his nearest rival David Fletcher could not overtake the Malvern Cycle Sport rider in the standings.

Fletcher can end the season with a maximum of 207 points but it won’t be enough as Killeen currently sits on 225 points going into the final round of the series.

Evie Richards boosted her chances of claiming the Elite Women’s title with her third successive victory of the season.

The 19-year-old, currently sitting on 180 points, knows a strong display in the final round of the series at Cannock Chase on August 6 would guarantee her the title as she can claim a maximum of 240 points.

Her closest title challenger Isla Short can only reach a maximum of 214 points.

Among the top performances in the Elite category races, junior cyclists from Malvern also put on strong displays against national level riders over the course of the two-day series.

Tom Bristow and Pippa Dale both secured second place in their respective Under-eight category races, Harriet Dale claimed third in the Under-tens followed by Tom Harnden finishing in a respectable fifth in the Sport race.

Jayden Randell put on a strong show in the Juvenile category coming in 21st with Louis Brooks ending the Youth category race in 11th.

Hattie Harnden took victory in the Youth Girls race with an impressive seven minute lead and Ryan Milne put on a great performance to take 11th in the Veterans class.

Elsewhere, the Junior category provided an exciting race with Ross Harnden and Stan Pritchard battling it out for the top three.

With just 14 seconds separating the leading trio, Harnden eventually claimed victory with Pritchard finishing in third.
