Malvern Town held to draw against battling Bewdley

MALVERN Town’s 100 per cent winning record in the West Midlands (Regional) Premier Division came to an end last night (Wednesday) after they were held to a 1-1 draw against Bewdley Town.

The Hillsiders were looking to secure a fourth straight league win but were left frustrated as they failed to find a winner despite late pressure at the HDAnywhere Community Stadium.

Malvern striker Dave Reynolds gave the home side the lead after 34 minutes when his cross into the box found its way into the back of net after hitting the inside of the post.

But a calamity of errors saw Malvern’s 1-0 lead slip just six minutes later when Dene Whittal-Williams headed into his own net.

Goalkeeper Charlie Weaver failed to collect a long ball into the box which then lead to a deflected strike hitting the post. Malvern were unable to clear the danger and Whittal-Williams ended up netting an own goal while trying to head the ball away from goal.

Malvern were close to regaining the lead on the 57th minute when Luke Corbett was put through one on one, only for Bewdley’s keeper to make a good save.

Ten minutes later saw a powerful shot from Nathan Hayward whistle over the bar before Bewdley came close to taking the lead when a nice move led to an effort just falling wide of target.

And Malvern were close to snatching the three points late on when Corbett’s shot struck the post after good work on the wing from substitute Matthew Turner.

A draw was deserved for Bewdley who produced a strong and battling display throughout despite having yet to win in the league this season.

Malvern, who remain unbeaten after their first four games with 10 points out of twelve, return to action on Saturday when they face AFC Bridgnorth away from home.
