Malvern Town hope to pull off shock win as FA Cup fever comes to town

FA CUP fever comes to town this weekend as Midland League Premier Division outfit Rocester make the trip to the HDAnywhere Community Stadium.

Malvern Town will take on the Staffordshire-based side in the Extra Preliminary Round tie on Saturday with the winner facing an away trip to Northern Premier First Division side Bedworth United in the next stage of the world famous tournament.

The Hillsiders were dumped out of England’s most prestigious cup competition at this very stage last season after slumping to a heavy 5-0 defeat to Sporting Khalsa who went on to reach the Fourth Qualifying Round before losing to FC United of Manchester.

And with another exciting game in prospect against higher league opposition this time around, Malvern boss Les Jones is hoping his players can rise to the occasion.

He said: “I’m really excited for this weekend’s game and the players are up for it too. Regardless of the result, I want all the squad to go out on the pitch and show off just how good we are.

“We are better prepared for our FA Cup game this year in comparison to last year. We’re a stronger outfit and I should have everyone available.

“Rocester are a strong side and it will be a real tough test for our players but it would be tremendous to walk away with victory.

“We’ve got to be sharp on Saturday. We need to react quickly to free-kicks, throw-ins and corners if we want to get a result.

“I’m urging as many people as possible to come down and watch as it will be an entertaining game and it will be good for them to watch local footballers take on higher league opposition.”

Malvern were due to play Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West outfit Evesham United last night (Tuesday) for their final pre-season friendly and after beating 6-2 West Midlands (Regional) Division One side Kington Town 6-2 on Friday.

Two goals apiece for Luke Corbett and Sean Smith as well as one each from Dave Reynolds and Lewis Platt saw the Hillsiders return to winning ways.

Jones added: “We made some changes during the game against Kington which disrupted the rhythm of our play in the second half but we went on to score two great goals so there’s plenty of positives to take out of Friday’s game.”
