MALVERN Town Ladies are through to the Women’s County Cup final after beating Droiwitch Spa Ladies in dramatic style after scoring an injury time equaliser and then winning on penalties.
It took a nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out to decide a tightly fought semi-final between both sides after they finished level at 1-1 in normal time.
But a memorable victory ensured Malvern will play Worcester United on Sunday, April 17 in what will be one of the side’s biggest matches in their history.
An entertaining semi-final saw Droitwich Spa start the brighter of the two sides but Malvern’s defence stood firm with skipper Sammie Shail in impressive form.
Droitwich Spa continued to dominate and almost took the lead in the first half but a goal line clearance from Malvern’s Naomi Heywood kept the match at a stalemate going into half-time.
But Droitwich Spa’s domination continued into the second half when they managed to break the deadlock to go 1-0 ahead.
It looked like it would be semi-final heartbreak for Malvern but their impressive defending was rewarded in the 90th minute when Annie Highway pounced home from a Michelle Davis free kick to level the scores.
With momentum on their side, Malven went on to win the deciding penalty shoot-out 3-2.
