MALVERN Town clinched third place in the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division in truly impressive style after thrashing Wellington Amateurs 8-2.

The emphatic win was Malvern’s tenth on the bounce, giving them the perfect ending to another impressive campaign.

It was the first time this season this season The Hillsiders have scored more than six goals in a league match.

Striker Luke Corbett netted a hat-trick and Ben Hayes hit two as Malvern ran riot against the lowly Shropshire side, who just days before survived relegation from the league.

At half-time they were 6-0 up before clinching an 8-2 win in one of the club’s most memorable nights in recent years.

Other goals on the night came from Dave Reynolds, Lewis Platt and Dene Whittal-Williams.

Speaking to the Observer earlier this week manager Les Jones said finishing third place would be ‘the holy grail’ of the season.

“Considering the start we had with injuries and struggling to get a consistent squad out, it’s been a real upturn in fortunes,” he said.

The win meant only two sides finished above Malvern in the league – champions Shawbury United and runners-up AFC Bridgnorth who Les Jones’ side beat impressively 4-2 back in March.
