Regatta success for Chase

A MALVERN school ruled the waves as its young sailors landed the top prize at the Worcestershire Schools’ Sailing and Canoeing Association Onboard Regatta.

A total of 42 youngsters from ten different schools across the county did battle for 17 sailing and paddling trophies at Upton Warren Sailing Club.

And it was Chase High School which scooped the Best School Team Trophy for a record seventh time since it was first introduced 20 years ago.

Sailing took place in a range of different junior and youth level dinghies — Laser Bugs, Picos, RS Fevas, Toppers and Lasers — and sailors ranged in ability.

Two students from the Chase also picked up individual honours, with Alex Russell winning the Pico Shield, and Joe Xia’s paddling exploits saw him with the Slalom and Long Distance Shields.

Witton Middle School, Westacre Middle School, Abberley Hall School, Bowbrook House School and Droitwich Spa High School also clinched awards, with the latter celebrating the success of Seb Andrews, who triumphed in the Handicap Shield for the second year running in his Laser.

The other schools represented were The King’s School, Worcester, South Bromsgrove High, Cheltenham College and The River School in Worcester.

Vivien Brookes, chair of the Worcestershire Schools’ Sailing and Canoeing Association, said: “The event was supported by more than 30 volunteers from Upton Warren, running races, doing safety cover, providing jetty support and catering.

“Without them this event wouldn’t have been possible so thanks to all who came down and got involved.”
