GEORGE Rhodes scored a magnificent century as Barnards Green beat Harborne by 68 runs in Division One of the Birmingham League.

The opener hit 103, with good support from Alex Hepburn (31) and Kevin Golder (30) as Green posted 229-8 from their 50 overs.

Mark Hardinges then ripped through the visitors batting line up with 4-19, while captain Andy Ford picked up three wickets as Harborne were shot out for 161.

After Green were asked to bat first, Andrew Curtis was out lbw early for two, but Hepburn and Rhodes forged a recovery with a partnership of 66 before Hepburn was bowled by Ali Khan to leave the hosts 97-2.

Alex Milton, Hardinges and Ford then fell in quick succession as Barnards Green were briefly wobbling on 139-5 before Rhodes and Golder shared a sixth-wicket stand of 76 in just ten overs.

Rhodes brought up his second century of the season in spectacular fashion with a huge straight six but was dismissed shortly afterwards when he was clean bowled by George Land.

His 119 ball innings contained nine fours and three sixes.

In the final over Golder was bowled but Jon Dovey hit 9 off 3 balls, including a six, to take the Green a competitive total.

In the Harborne reply, Alex Hepburn took an early wicket, and Hardinges then claimed his first two scalps as the Birmingham side were reduced to 38-3.

A fourth-wicket stand of 45 between Guriq Randhawa and Dalton Polius got Harborne back in the game before Dovey broke the partnership when he trapped Randhawa lbw for 35.

Chris Smedley then joined the attack and claimed this wicket with his first ball. He let go what could only be described as a loosener which Polius (23) miss-judged completely and skied it to Dovey at mid-wicket to leave Harborne 83-5.

Wickets continued to tumble as Hardinges picked up a couple more and Ford finished with 3-32 as Harborne were bowled out in just 38.2 overs.

Green now sit fifth in the table and visit third-placed Wolverhampton on Saturday before hosting relegation-threatened Shifnal on Bank Holiday Monday.
