Rhodes to join England camp in Bangladesh

Worcestershire’s Director of Cricket, Steve Rhodes, will assist England management for the two Tests in Bangladesh.

Rhodes will fly out on October 10 and return on November 2 – in time for when Worcestershire begin their winter training programme in earnest at Malvern College and New Road.

It is another feather in the cap for Worcestershire and Rhodes.

He recently came in for praise from Andy Flower – the ECB technical director of elite coaching – for the “excellent job” he has undertaken at first team level and also further down the scale at New Road.

Rhodes is relishing the prospect of working with the England players – including Worcestershire’s Moeen Ali – and the coaching team headed by Trevor Bayliss.

He said: “The time with the Lions last year was terrific and I really enjoyed working with Andy Flower and the players and the other staff.

“I always felt the Lions should be shared around with the county coaches so to get an opportunity to work with the first team for a short period in Bangladesh for the Test series is terrific.

“It is something I’m really looking forward to and it has also come at a really good time for Worcestershire because October is the month when we are very quiet as coaches at Worcestershire.

“The period when I will be working at the two Tests will be perfect for Worcestershire and perfect for me and hopefully I can learn a lot and bring some of it back to New Road.

“It is an opportunity for me to work with some very good players and very good staff and pick their brains and hopefully help a few people along the way. The end result is to try and do well for English cricket.”

Rhodes involvement with England means he will not have much opportunity to take a break after the six month domestic season.

But he said: “I’d rather be taking a fantastic opportunity like this. It might mean less time off for me but it’s a great opportunity I can’t miss.”
