On doctors' orders: Queen advised not to travel to COP26

Her Majesty The Queen has regretfully pulled out of attending the COP26 summit which officially starts this Sunday, Buckingham Palace has announced.

A statement from Buckingham Palace earlier today said:

“FOLLOWING ADVICE TO REST, THE QUEEN HAS BEEN UNDERTAKING LIGHT DUTIES AT WINDSOR CASTLE.

“HER MAJESTY HAS REGRETFULLY DECIDED THAT SHE WILL NO LONGER TRAVEL TO GLASGOW TO ATTEND THE EVENING RECEPTION OF COP26 ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 1.

“HER MAJESTY IS DISAPPOINTED NOT TO ATTEND THE RECEPTION BUT WILL DELIVER AN ADDRESS TO THE ASSEMBLED DELEGATES VIA A RECORDED VIDEO MESSAGE.”

This morning the Queen appeared in high spirits as she held virtual audiences at Windsor Castle, her first official engagements after she was ordered to rest by her doctors following her overnight hospital stay last week.

Her Majesty held a virtual audience with Gunn Kim, the ambassador from the Republic of Korea via video link from her residence in Berkshire and then held an audience with the new Swiss ambassador to the UK, Markus Leitner.

The Queen was last seen in public on October 19, when she hosted a reception for the Global Investment Summit at Windsor Castle.

The following day, Buckingham Palace revealed the Queen was meant to travel to Northern Ireland for a two-day trip marking its centenary – but the Queen’s doctors had advised against it.

It is unclear on what medical grounds the Queen was admitted to hospital last week but it’s been a busy few months for the 95-year-old reigning monarch.

The official record of the Queen’s diary shows at least 16 formal events during the first half of October.

Other members of the Royal Family including the Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will still attend the climate conference.

The 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) is being held in Glasgow on 31 October – 12 November 2021.
