Number of fines issued by West Mercia Police for Covid-19 breaches puts force the 'strictest in the country'

WEST Mercia Police issued 214 fines to people not wearing face coverings between March 27 last year and January 17, 2021.

That figure is higher than any other police force in the country and 51 more than second placed Northamptonshire Police.

In total, the force issued 999 fines including 240 during the first and second national lockdown to people ‘breaking lockdown regulations’.

Two-hundred and sixty-nine fines were issued to rule breakers when the tier systems were introduced.

Only four penalties were issued for gatherings of more than 30 people, and seven for international travel regulation breaches.

Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said the force would continue to enforce the rules in a ‘proportionate’ way.

He said: “It is my duty to provide oversight and scrutiny to make sure West Mercia Police is acting in the best interests of the communities it serves.

“It has been one of the most challenging years in recent history, with the force needing to change and adapt to meet the demands of the national health emergency.

“We are now seeing some light at the end of the tunnel with the roll out of the new Covid-19 vaccine, but we cannot afford to become complacent.

“The force still has a duty to uphold the current restrictions.

“As commissioner I will continue to stand up for what our community needs to be kept safe, and that includes, for the time being, the policing response to Covid 19.”
