FORMER University of Worcester student Chloe Hanks got a very nice graduation present when her poem was selected to be published in a collaborative anthology to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, writes Ryan Smith.

Chloe, 22, is one of 55 chosen poets to be featured in ‘Hair-Raising’ where all the poems are centred around the subject of hair.

The anthology is being published by Nine Pens and will be released later this year.

This published work caps off a remarkable 12 months for Chloe. It began with last year’s contribution to another anthology ‘Poetry in the Time of Coronavirus’ that raised money for global charities throughout the pandemic.

Chloe said: “It’s fantastic to be selected to contribute to such worthwhile causes.

“This years been a difficult year for everyone and poetry has been a source of great enjoyment to me through that, so for my work to help others is a very gratifying feeling.”

The biggest success in her fledgling poetry career came in April, when her own anthology ‘May

We All Be Artefacts’ won the V Press Poetry Prize.

The book received rave reviews upon release, with poet and author Charley Barnes describing it as ‘an exciting and urgent new release, from a powerful and distinct voice’.

That anthology earned her an open mic night hosted by the University of Worcester, where Chloe graduated from last month after receiving a first in English Literature and Creative Writing.

It was studying at the university where Chloe first became obsessed with the genre after poet Nellie Cole visited one of her lectures.

Chloe added: “I loved what she did and how she used poetic form to tell a story.

“One of the reasons I love poetry is it seems infinite in terms of what you can do. There is so much room for innovation, it’s a genre that’s constantly changing and evolving.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better university experience. Studying English Literature alongside creative writing was the best because I was consistently encouraged to think about the reader as well as the writer.

“I think emerging writers will find something enlightening in my work and that it entices more people to fall in love with poetry as I have.”
