Back-to-back defeats for Malvern

Craig Gibbons 24th Sep, 2018

MALVERN tasted back-to-back defeats in Midlands One West following their 24-13 reverse at home to Sutton Coldfield.

The hosts took the lead after eight minutes on Saturday when Ben King kicked between the posts following a ruck infringement.

Unperturbed by the early setback Sutton continued to press with Chris Duckworth squeezing over in the corner to put the visitors 5-3 up.

Tom Burrows was next to cross over for Sutton after 33 minutes, with Ben Morgan’s conversion putting them nine points ahead.

Malvern reduced the arrears four minutes later when King kicked his second penalty of the afternoon.

After the break it took just nine minutes for the visitors to extend their advantage when Burrows registered his second try.

The visitors’ fourth try arrived just before the hour mark when Jack Ward crashed over.

Morgan’s conversion put Sutton 24-6 ahead.

Malvern were rewarded with a consolation try in the 77th minute when John Wills touched down.

King converted to complete scoring.

Malvern make the trip to Shropshire side Whitchurch on Saturday.
