Jenkins has sights on gold

VICKY Jenkins will be gunning for gold when she represents Great Britain at the World Archery Para Championships next month.

The Malvern archer will be flying out to Donaueschingen, Germany, to compete in the event which takes place between August 23 and August 30.

Jenkins has been named as part of a 17-strong archery squad which will be looking to do their country proud at the biennial tournament.

Two years ago, the British team dominated the World Archery Para Championships, winning a total of two golds, three silvers and two bronze medals.

And Archery GB have named another strong team which will compete across five classes: W1, recurve, compound and visually impaired VI B1 and VI B2/B3.

Jenkins will be taking part in the W1 class, along with team-mates Jo Frith and Jessica Stretton as all three have a disability which affects four limbs. The sharp shooters will also have the added incentive as the Para event is a key tournament for winning quota places in the run-up to the Rio Paralympics next year.

Michael Peart, Paralympic coach at Archery GB, said: “The team has been working extremely hard in the build-up to this year’s World Archery Para Championships and are looking forward to competing on the world stage, whether that’s for the first time or as a familiar environment.

“This event is key on the Road to Rio, not only in achieving quota places, but also in giving the archers experience in a high-pressured shooting situation.

“We hope to build on the success of the tournament in 2013 and lay the foundations for the Paralympics in Rio next year.”
