BOCCIA and New Age Kurling classes have begun at the Malvern Cube in a bid to get the community active and prolong the Olympic legacy.
Through the National Lottery’s Sportivate scheme, the district council has funded equipment for the Malvern Nightclub Action Group to provide sessions for those with learning disabilities.
Boccia began at the Albert Road North venue on October 18 and will continue for the next four Fridays before a six week programme of New Age Kurling takes its place.
Boccia is similar to bowls where competitors have to throw balls towards the jack and end up closer than their opponent.
The latter sport – derived from the ice based sport curling – involves the same principle but sees players gliding the ‘stones’ towards the target instead.
Coun Phil Grove, responsible for sports and leisure, said: “It’s fantastic that Malvern Hills District Council, working with a local community group and our sports partners, can help facilitate the launch of a new set of Olympic-inspired sports classes for young people.”
The sessions are for 14 to 25 year olds and run between 1.30pm and 2.30pm on Fridays.
