A CONTROVERSIAL grant application from one of the town’s football teams is set to be decided by the town council.
At tomorrow’s (Wednesday) meeting of the policy and resources committee, representatives from Newtown Sports Football Club will bid for £1,028.92 for essential maintenance equipment.
The money would be used to help buy a line marker and pay towards tools for lawn cutting, hedge trimming and building maintenance.
The total investment is around £2,060 but the Greenhill Drive based club says it can pay half and is requesting the council fund the other 50 per cent.
In the application, chairman Rob Eyles said the money was for day-to-day upkeep of areas which could not be accessed by vehicle machines and not for cutting the grass pitches or wider area.
He added the equipment was needed to provide a safe playing environment for its 160 junior members as well as making the area available to use by the wider community.
It was decided at the last full council meeting earlier this month that the club should formally apply for the money. However the prospect of the grant angered some members who had not forgotten a council dispute with NSFC over the rights to the Greenhill Drive land.
At the meeting Coun Patrick Mewton said: “I’m not sure why they need this equipment they told the committee at district council they already had.
“Now they are coming and asking us for it. I don’t think we should.”
