Make a date to help raise cash for Gambia project

Malvern Editorial 28th Nov, 2013 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016   0

CALENDARS featuring images of Malvern have gone on sale to help young people in The Gambia.

The calendar has been created by Jane Smith, who set up the Just Act Gambia charity four years ago to support a river island community in Janjanbureh.

She produced a photobook called Malvern Common Through Spring and Summer which has now been transformed into a calender of photos of Malvern Common, Malvern Wells Common and Worcestershire Golf Course.

She said: “I have produced it myself and is beautifully printed by The Coaster Company of Spring Lane. Assembling it myself I have been able to keep the price to £7.50 and make a good profit for the charity.

“With our support there is now a registered youth group in Janjanbureh called Just Act. The immediate fund-raising is to support them in becoming independent by September 2014.”

Initially the group will use donations to rent and run an office and fund basic key workers to support their seasonal work as tour guides and their year-round work on a banana plantation.

They will then use further funds for specific projects such as small scale skills enterprises.

“£600+ this year started a craft enterprise training six young people. They are now independent and producing goods for locals and tourists.”

The calendar is available at the Cooperative Bookshop on St Anne’s Road or by calling 01684 567409 or 07553 103576. Visit www.justactgambia.org or www.facebook.com/justactgambia for more information.
