Full of Eastern promise

PUPILS enjoyed a special Japanese day ahead of the language becoming part of their curriculum next year.

Last Tuesday (December 3), youngsters from Great Malvern Primary School tried their hand at origami, calligraphy and Taiko drumming as well as sporting kimonos.

There were also Japanese inspired lunches provided by the catering staff as the school marked its Japanese launch day.

In January pupils in Year 4, 5 and 6 at Great Malvern will learn the language as part of the curriculum supported by the Japanese Foundation. It is a move the school has been able to take after becoming an academy.

Headteacher Paul Jackson-Read said: “Children are fascinated with Japanese life and culture which sparks their desire for more learning.

“They see lots of examples of anime (Japanese cartoons) on television and readily engage with all aspects of Japanese life although often a few are not too keen on Japanese food.”
