Town claim rare away win at Ellesmere

MALVERN Town secured only their second victory on the road this season as they edged Ellesmere Rangers 2-1 at a blustery Beech Grove.

The hosts did take an early lead when Mike O’Reilly fired home, but Malvern quickly levelled through Dave Reynolds before striker Lewis Doyle scored the winner in the second half.

The result not only ended their winless run which stretched back until October, but it also lifts Town up to 13th in the table.

After thrashing Pelsall Villa reserves 4-1 in the cup last Wednesday, Malvern arrived in confident mood and they almost got off to the perfect start in Shropshire, but Lee Hooper’s shot clipped the post and went wide.

Town keeper Charles Weaver also had to be on his toes early on and he did well to dive at full stretch to deny Sean Griffiths.

However, from the resultant corner Rangers found the back of the net as O’ Reilly steered the ball past Weaver.

Malvern reacted well, though, and scored the equaliser on the 12th minute. Reynolds ran the ball from the halfway line before his cross-come-shot flew across the goal and nestled in the top corner.

It may have been helped in by a strong wind, which made life difficult for both sets of players as they struggled to string decent passages of play together for the remained of the half.

Despite the conditions, Malvern made a bright start to the second period and took the lead on the hour mark when a corner kick was played back to Doyle who hammered home.

This proved to be enough for the visitors despite losing Mark Saysell late on as he was brandished a second yellow card.
