THE CONSERVATIVE Party maintained their strength of power at Malvern Hills District Council after winning a by-election.

Chris O’Donnell was elected onto the council for the Malvern Wells ward after securing more than 300 votes.

The by-election was called to fill the seat left vacant following the death of Chris Cheeseman earlier this year and saw a total of 850 votes cast – a turnout of 31.48 per cent.

Coun O’Donnell swept into the seat with 317 votes – 37 per cent of the by-election vote – ahead of Liberal Democrat candidate Simon Gill (227) into second spot with UKIP’s Richard Spencer (158) in third. Independent candidate Louise Gibson (76) finished fourth and Labour’s Christopher Burrows (71) propping up the pack in last place.

A retired teacher, Coun O’Donnell is a local businesswoman who has lived in Malvern Wells for more than 34 years serving as a Parish Councillor for six years.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported me and for the many messages of congratulations I have received,” she said.

“I appreciate the confidence shown in me and I am ready to serve the people of Wells ward.”

David Hughes Leader of Malvern Hills District Council, added: “This is an excellent result and a clear endorsement of the Conservative administration’s policy of putting people before politics and our aim of providing high quality services at the lowest cost to residents.”

Malvern MP Harriett Baldwin said: “I congratulate Chris on her successful election. I know she will be a true local champion and I look forward to working with her on behalf of the residents of Wells ward.”
