Conservators unearth 550-million-year-old beach in Malvern

Malvern Editorial 14th Feb, 2015 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016   0

GEOLOGY dating back hundreds of millions of years has been uncovered by hard-working volunteers in Malvern.

The Malvern Hills Conservators tackled overgrown scrub on eight sites across the hills and discovered a 550-million-year-old beach at the Gullet Pass Pit.

Part funded by the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Herefordshire and Worcestershire Earth Heritage Trust, the trust also targeted Rushy Valley and Gardiner’s Quarry across the town’s landmark setting.

Wildlife looks set to benefit from the work as a variety of mosses and lichens can grow on rock where it has been exposed.
