Calls for Malvern Conservators' chair to stand down

Malvern Editorial 19th Feb, 2015 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016   0

CALLS have been made for the chairman of the Malvern Conservators to resign after plans to build a cable car on the town’s hills were knocked back.

The proposals were rejected at a special meeting of the Conservators board but Malvern for All – the company behind the bid – has reacted angrily to the decision and lobbied Helen Stace to step down from her post, while admitting they still harbour aims of getting the project off the ground.

Clive Smith, director of Malvern for All, said: “The board of Malvern for All between them bring years of experience over a wide range of expertise.

“Some people may be shocked at the intensity of the criticism we have encountered. A few years ago I played a big role with bringing Waitrose into Malvern and the heavy artillery that came our way was intense.

“In comparison the anti cable car people are only capable of small arms fire. We will continue to strive and succeed in turning this dream into a reality.”

The meeting last Thursday (February 12) saw 21 members vote against the plans, none vote in favour and one member abstain.

A spokesman for Malvern for All added: “It felt like the Conservators officers were being used as a kind of campaign HQ with fingers poised above keyboards to down rate every comment on the internet which showed even the slightest support for the cable car.

“Accordingly, Malvern for All calls on the chairman of the Conservators to resign on the grounds that she misled the Conservators on several matters and the vote was unconstitutional and invalidated because of the false information provided and the lack of impartiality exhibited.”

“Malvern for All have never asked for access to the hills for any purpose so the assertion that no more permissions would be given was misleading.

“Neither did the company see the point of a meeting which led precisely nowhere or indeed request one.”

The Conservators had not commented on the calls before the Observer went to print.
