Tesco starts work on cattle market store

DEMOLITION work on the old cattle market site in Tenbury is set to start to pave the way for a new supermarket in the town.

Retail giant Tesco confirmed in January it would be pressing ahead with plans to build a store, despite the announcement they would have to close 40 shops nationwide and were not going ahead with proposals to construct another 49 across the country.

But the supermarket confirmed last Tuesday (February 24) they are due to start work ahead of building the new shop.

This includes removing current structures next to the former fire station and Tesco representatives have contacted Tenbury MP Harriett Baldwin to brief her on the work.

Mrs Baldwin, MP for West Worcestershire, said: “There have been historic question marks over the future of the Tesco store construction so it is helpful to be kept informed.

“Whatever your views about this development, it is better to have certainty rather than a site with planning blight in such a prominent location in this wonderful town.

“I hope that as the company moves forward on this project we will also see it fulfilling its pledge to support the Tenbury Transport Trust and that it will allow the Tenbury Museum to relocate and invest in flood defences along the River Teme.”
