Grow and sell is back in town

Malvern Editorial 4th May, 2015 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016   0

MALVERN youngsters are being encouraged to be greener in Waitrose’s annual Grow and Sell scheme, which is returning to the town for the third time.

The aim of the drive is to get more school children aged between seven and 11 to grow their own produce during the summer months and sell it outside Waitrose Great Malvern.

It is hoped it will help them to learn where food comes from and develop entrepreneurial skills.

Waitrose is now distributing Grow and Sell kits to schools to help get their veg patches up and running. It will contain vegetable seeds, equipment and badges for the children to designate roles.

Malvern schools can also use the Grow and Sell education app where children, parents and teachers can access information on where their food comes from, how it was produced, and the importance of environment and seasonality. It also features a crop timer to advise when produce needs planting and harvesting in order to get the best yield.

The scheme has been immensely popular in the town’s Waitrose with customers supporting it by dropping a green token into a Community Matters scheme box and casting a vote for Waitrose to fund the initiative.

Scott Whittaker, manager of Waitrose Great Malvern, said: “Having seen the success of the last two years’ projects, it brings us immense pleasure to be able to offer the ‘Grow and Sell’ scheme.

“We hope it will encourage children to choose to eat well and inspire entrepreneurial minds to flourish.”
