A PAIR of volunteers will embark on a 6,000-mile trip across the globe to take their place on an international adventure camp.

Melina Platt and Jane Riley have been selected to represent Girlguiding, the UKs leading charity for girls and young women, at the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan.

The 12-day global youth event, which takes place in July and August, will be attended by more than 30,000 guides and scouts from all over the world, including 1,000 from the UK.

Melinda, assistant brownie guider of the 7th Malvern Link Brownies, and Jane, brownie guider of 1st Longdon Brownies, will be in a team taking part in everything from water sports to helping raise awareness of global issues.

There will also be a peace programme commemorating the atomic bombing of cities in Japan during the Second World War.

That will include a visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

Melinda said: “Volunteering with Girlguiding is so rewarding and has opened up so many exciting opportunities, like this international adventure which I would not have had the chance to do otherwise.

“I lived in Japan and have some language skills so thought I could offer this to scouting. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime trip.”

Jane added: “I am most looking forward to meeting other volunteers and young people from across the globe, sharing knowledge and experiences and working together to make a positive impact.”
