ONE OF the world’s most influential jazz musicians helped to raise £5,500 for charity when he made a special appearance in Malvern.

Chris Barber, who became a major figure in bringing Blues and Gospel music to audiences across Europe, and his band performed at the Forum Theatre in Malvern last month.

The concert, which raised money for the Worcester Branch of Parkinson’s UK, saw the 85-year-old go through the whole range of music from his long career, including early New Orleans sound to Blues and Gospel and then the 20s and 30s style of Chicago and New York.

Basil Selwood, who organised the event, which was presented by the Rotary Club of Bredon Hill, said: “It was a fantastically enjoyable evening and this was certainly reflected in the standing ovation from the audience at the end.

“Barber clearly demonstrated what an iconic living legend he has now become.”
