DOZENS of people braved the wet weather to pay their respects on Remembrance Sunday in Malvern.

A huge gathering of between 200 and 300 people was held outside the town’s library on Graham Road for the 40 minute service to honour those who sacrificed their lives during times of national conflict.

The day’s service began at 2pm when members of Her Majesty’s armed forces marched around the town centre before heading to Malvern Library for the service.

The service, organised by Malvern Town Council and the British Royal Legion, was led by Rev’d Canon John Barr next to the war memorial outside the library which included a number of hymns and a two-minutes silence.

Dignitaries including Malvern Mayor Julian I’Anson, Malvern Hills District Council vice-chairman John Raine and the town’s MP Harriett Baldwin were on hand to lay a wreath to mark remembrance.

Wreaths were also laid by members of Malvern Round Table, Malvern Rotary Club and representatives from Malvern schools.

The service concluded with the singing of the national anthem and a final parade from the library to take the salute along Graham Road.

Speaking to the Observer, Mrs Baldwin said she was pleased to see a great turnout for the service.

“The community came together to mark Remembrance Day,” she said.

“It has been great to see so many people young and old pay tribute to all those who sacrificed their lives and served their country and gave it the security and freedom which we enjoy today.”

Volunteer Captain Lindon Lloyd, who helped organise the service, said: “It’s been a lovely service and was great to see people young and old attend.

“I’ve been involved in organising these services for the past 15 years and I think that is one of the biggest parades we have seen. It was also good to see the schools get involved in the ceremony.”
