PLANS to further expand Great Malvern Cemetery are soon to be submitted to planning bosses, the Observer can reveal.
Malvern Town Council bosses plan to use extra land, which the authority has purchased, on the Madresfield Road site to provide space for burials for the next 25 years.
Charles Porter, operations manager at Malvern Town Council, said a planning application would be sent to Malvern Hills District Council in a matter of weeks.
“We are doing this because we want to provide the people of Malvern burial space for the next 25 years,” he said.
Part of the town since 1861, the cemetery last underwent an expansion in 2007.
The cemetery contains some 15,000 burials including most famously opera singer Jenny Lind who was known as the ‘Swedish Nightingale’.
Plans have to go to through the district council because the town council wants to change the use of the land to include burials from allotment space, which it was previously used for.
