A MALVERN Rugby player was airlifted to hospital after sustaining a serious ankle injury during his side’s league match over the weekend.

Jack Longley suffered the injury after falling awkwardly in a match against Spartans on Saturday (February 13) at the club’s Spring Lane home.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to the ground shortly after 3.30pm, where Mr Longley received care from an ambulance.

A Midlands Air Ambulance from Strensham then landed on the pitch to airlift Mr Longley to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further treatment.

The match was abandoned after 67 minutes following the injury, but Malvern’s 30-19 victory stood.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The man, believed to be in his 20s, suffered a serious ankle injury whilst playing rugby.

“On arrival, ambulance staff worked to stabilise his condition and administered pain relief.

“Once the ankle had been straightened, the man was flown to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further assessment.”

Malvern’s director of rugby, David Irish said: “The whole club wish Jack a safe and full recovery. He’s one of those unsung heroes who’s always in the thick of the action.

“He has great speed over the ground and is a fine line-out specialist. We’re going to miss him over the rest of the season.”
