A MALVERN academy is to stage a special fund-raising concert this weekend to help transform the lives of people living in one of the world’s poorest countries.

Several local bands are to take part in the fun-filled evening on Saturday at Dyson Perrins Academy to help fund a transformation projects in Tanzania which one of the school’s students and a member of staff will help deliver.

Going on the trip in July are sixth form student Tia Campbell and Rhian Caffull, who works with disadvantaged students at the school. They will join students from other schools across the country.

The trip will involve helping with the construction and refurbishment of part of a school which will help improve the life chances of the children there and directly benefiting families in need in the local villages.

Teaching assistance will also be provided to helping locals develop their skills of conversational English, whilst additionally implementing physical education.

Miss Caffull told the Observer both she and Tia were very excited to be part of the trip.

“It’s great to be part of the trip and both me and Tia can’t wait to get out there – it’s going to be a great experience,” she said. “It will be great to see at first hand the positive impact we can make in transforming people’s lives.”

On Saturday evening, various bands and musicians such as Sunfire, Ziggy and Ian, Lounge Toad, Leon Charles Morgan and Carrie-Anne Abba & Laura Todd will take to the stage. There will also be steel pan music provided by the children of Somers Park School.

Raffle prizes have been generously donated by companies as diverse as Domino’s Pizza and Morgan Motor Factory. A licenced bar is provided for the event.

Adam Hawkesford-Johnson, assistant headteacher at Dyson Perrins, added: “Students at Dyson Perrins CofE Academy are thrilled to have the opportunity to make a profound, lasting and positive impact on disadvantaged communities in Tanzania this summer.

“The school is adept at supporting local need but is very much looking forward to supporting other communities abroad through Camps International.

“The expenses involved are considerable and Miss Caffull has been working tirelessly over the last few months to raise funds including various charity events, the culmination of which takes place on Saturday for what will be an extravaganza of music and entertainment.”

Tickets cost £5 and are available at The Nags Head or on the door. It starts at 7pm with a 12.30am finish.
