MESSAGES of goodwill have been sent to dedicated Malvern councillor Tom Wells after he suffered serious burn injuries following an accident.

Coun Wells, who covers the Powick ward both as a county and district councillor for the Liberal Democrat Party, is currently undergoing treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham after what is believed to be a bonfire incident.

In a statement Worcestershire County Council confirmed he was taken to hospital after an accident at his home in Callow End last week.

Fellow Malvern Hills district councillor Julian Roskams said he was very shocked to hear of Coun Wells’ accident.

“I was very shocked and saddened to hear about Cllr Wells’ accident last week – as were my whole group on the District Council,” he said.

“Our thoughts are very much with him, his wife Kathy and his many friends.

“Tom has been an absolute colossus in the world of Malvern Hills politics – with an extraordinary breadth of knowledge on a whole range of issues, an instinctive ability to understand the concerns of local residents, and an enviable ability to articulate them. It is no surprise that over the years he has been returned to office by his community with ever-increasing majorities.

“As we await further news of Tom’s condition, we are very much hoping he will make a full recovery and that he will be back with us and where he belongs before too long. In the meantime we offer our full support to his family, friends and colleagues.”

Coun Liz Tucker, leader of the Liberal Democrats on the County Council said: “Our thoughts are with Tom and his wife. We all wish him a speedy and full recovery.”

Coun Phil Grove, Leader of Malvern Hills District Council, added: “Our thoughts and best wishes are with Tom and his family. We’re all shocked and concerned to hear this news and wish him a speedy recovery.”

Messages have also flooded in on Tom Wells’ Facebook page.

A get well message from Celia read: “Tom your loved and missed – we all need you – but what is most important is your speedy recovery, Get well very soon. x

And Monica Muench posted: “Tom so sorry to hear you’re in hospital. How will we manage without you. Thinking of you and please come back soon.”
